Q. Why a dissolution study now?
A. Residents petitioned the Village Board of Trustees for a referendum on the question of dissolving the Village. Under state law, the Village must complete a dissolution study prior to the vote. Learn more

 

Q. What is Village dissolution?
A. Dissolution is a process whereby a village ceases to exist as a governmental entity. The process of village dissolution does not require the consent of the town in which the village is located. Article 19 of New York's Village Law describes procedures to achieve dissolution of villages.

A. The study team consists of residents who were jointly appointed by the Village and Town Boards. To see the list of members, click here.

Q. What is the population of the Village and Town?
A. The Census 2007 estimates show 54,379 residents in the Town. Village residents represent 14,824 or 27% of the Town's residents.

 

Q. What is the land area of the Village and Town?
A. Based on Census data, the Town has 35.2 square miles of land, with the Village accounting for 4.4 square miles (about 13% of the Town).

 

Q. Will a dissolution of the Village of Johnson City affect the schools?
A. No. The Johnson City school district is separate from the Village government and will not be affected in any way if the Village dissolves.

 

Q. Will a dissolution change my post office address?
A. No. Johnson City will continue to have a post office.

 

Q. What will happen to the name "Johnson City" if the Village dissolves?
A. If the Village dissolves, the former Village will still retain its name much as Endwell and Westover do in the Town of Union.
