About the study

The Village of Dryden is seeking a comprehensive study that will outline opportunities to reduce municipal costs while maintaining the quality of life for Village residents. The study will be comprised of a discussion of options including status quo, reduction, improvement, elimination, and contracting for service allowing the Village Board to make an informed decision on the future of police services. The Village applied for and received a Local Government Efficiency Grant in the amount of $25,000 to fund this study.

Tompkins County is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York at the southern end of Cayuga Lake. Tompkins County was formed from portions of Seneca and the former Cayuga County in 1817 and had 101,564 residents in the 2010 census. The Village of Dryden, incorporated in 1857, is located in the Town of Dryden, halfway between Ithaca and Cortland. A diminishing tax base threatens the Village's ability to continue to efficiently provide quality services without further increasing the taxes, which have increased more than 5% annually in the past 5 years. While prudent economics requires Village leaders to examine cost saving changes in service delivery, they must also commit to maintaining an excellent quality of life for Village residents. A Police Services Restructuring Study will investigate all available means to reduce the cost of police service and will contain practical recommendations that can be implemented and sustained.
