New York State increased nearly one percent in government employment. New York City and Buffalo had the sharpest movements. Overall, half of the regions in New York State increased employment in the sector.

New York State saw a slight increase in other services over the past year. The sector remained steady in most New York State regions. Buffalo saw a great increase rising 3.5% over the past year. No region experienced substantial employment decreases in the sector.

NYS Leisure and Hospitality employment rose 2% in New York State in the past year. Utica-Rome was the only region experiencing decline in this sector while both Albany and New York City experienced growth above 2%.

Educational and health services employment in NYS rose 1.1% year-over-year. Buffalo-NF and Rochester had the highest increase at 2.7%. Binghamton did not change year over year while Nassau-Suffolk had a small decrease is this sector at .2%

New York City continued to post the strongest growth in the state in the month of August, expanding 1.2% at an annualized rate. Buffalo and Syracuse lost jobs (on a seasonally-adjusted basis); Binghamton and Utica-Rome still lag the rest of the state in year-over-year employment growth.

Professional and business service employment in NYS rose by almost 2% year-over-year. Buffalo-NF had the highest increase at over 3%. Albany and Binghamton both lost jobs in this sector during the previous year.

Financial activities employment rose by 1.5% over the past year. Buffalo-NF, Poughkeepsie, and Utica-Rome were the big winners with gains above 3% while Albany lost 3% of their sector’s employment over the past year.

Employment in information for New York State fell by 1.2% in the past year. Buffalo-NF was the major catalyst for this drop-off with a nearly 10% decrease in sector employment. Rochester had the biggest positive growth in the information sector.

Employment in transportation, warehousing, and public utilities for New York State rose slightly. Utica-Rome had the sharpest increase of nearly 6%.
