Keynote: “Ensuring Effective Educators is Revolutionary Work”
Introduction: Wade Norwood, NYS Board of Regents (click for bio)
Wade S. Norwood is a Regent of the State of New York and Director of Community Engagement for the Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency (FLHSA). Prior to joining FLHSA, Regent Norwood served as legislative aide to Assemblyman David Gantt and served on the Rochester City Council. Architect of the City of Rochester's highly regarded Police Citizen Review Board, instrumental in the creation of the “Neighbors Building Neighborhoods” planning process; and crafted several city homeownership and neighborhood revitalization programs. Regent Norwood is a native Rochesterian, and a graduate of the University of Rochester (B.S. Political Science).
Keynote Address: David Steiner, PhD, NYS Commissioner of Education (click for bio)
David M. Steiner was born in Princeton, New Jersey and was raised in Cambridge, England. He earned degrees from Balliol College, Oxford University (B.A. and M.A.) and Harvard University (Ph.D.). From 1999 to 2004 he was a professor of education in Boston University's School of Education in its department of administration. From 2005 to 2009 he served as dean of Hunter College-CUNY's School of Education. At Hunter, Dr. Steiner led a national partnership with the KIPP Academies, Uncommon Schools, Achievement First and Teach for America to create a dedicated teacher preparation program for charter and non-charter school teachers geared to the unique challenges of urban schools. Known as Teacher U at Hunter, the partnership has gained national attention for rethinking what rigorous teacher preparation looks like. The New York State Board of Regents chose Steiner to replace the out-going Richard P. Mills in 2009. |

CGR will also pay special tribute to colleague Donald Pryor, PhD, Director of Human Service Analysis, for his 40 years of service to CGR. Since becoming a director in 1982, Don has directed 160 projects in 22 counties across NYS!

Mr. Lemov is the author of the recently released Teach Like a Champion: 49 Techniques that Put Students on the Path to College, and the subject of a recent New York Times Magazine cover story. Mr. Lemov has spent countless hours observing effective teachers in many settings, using video and interviews to hone in on the small, intentional techniques and strategies that make stellar teachers.
A former teacher, principal, and consultant, Mr. Lemov is currently managing director at Uncommon Schools, an organization that starts and runs exceptionally high-performing public schools in urban centers in New York and New Jersey. Mr. Lemov oversees Uncommon's upstate schools in Rochester and Troy and leads teacher trainings both across Uncommon and externally working with such organizations as Teacher U, KIPP, Teach For America, Achievement First, Building Excellent Schools, New Schools for New Orleans, and New Leaders for New Schools. He is a graduate of Hamilton College and received graduate degrees from Indiana University and the Harvard Business School.
